Meet Ammie Akin
Her Journey to Congress
Ammie Akin has been moving mountains for a long time.
In simpler terms, she’s been in training for political office for a good part of her life. She does more than talk about problems. She creates solutions. She brings her thoughts and ideas to life.
And there’s one thing that makes her different from most politicians: she has empathy. She doesn’t just make her grand entrance up to the podium and walk away.
Ammie is a spirited entrepreneur, an educator for all ages — children, adults, grad students, and career professionals—a strong community voice with a heart for all people with all needs.
That comes natural for her. She was taught the values of the United States Constitution from a host of influencers in her life. She comes from a long line of public servants, relatives who served their country, and a brother who is active in law enforcement.
Ammie, her husband Will, and their three sons, have built their family and their life in Alabama. With deep roots in her community and a strong foundation in service, Ammie is ready to represent Alabama’s 7th Congressional District.
Building Community
Through Service
Most recently, Akin and her husband, Will, began developing Hub in the Hills, a privately funded project designed to transform a former elementary school into a shared campus for nonprofit organizations and community programs. The project is intended to provide organizations with space and resources while supporting programs for families and adults with disabilities.
The project reflects Akin's background in education, leadership, nonprofit work, and community development. Rather than creating another standalone organization, Hub in the Hills is designed around the idea of bringing organizations together so they can share resources and focus more of their
efforts on serving people.
Ammie’s Climb
Ammie’s quest for the highest level of education started when she was four years old, teaching her dolls. From the first time she recited the “Pledge of Allegiance” in pre-school to growing up with a family who served our country, she’s been taught the values of “We the People.”
Earning degrees from the University of Alabama, a master’s degree and a doctorate in Educational Leadership from Samford University, Ammie became a working mother. And apart from that, she also served her community, credentialing her passion to create a better Alabama.
Among those standout accomplishments, she built a literacy program to stop the summer reading slide that still runs across the state today. She trained Alabama's next generation of principals to become superintendents.
She listens. She believes. She builds relationships, community, and buildings, if needed.
Ammie has seen, spoken, and heard the needs of the people in the district. She’s tackled their struggles firsthand, and she’s armed with a notebook full of working solutions, ready to move more mountains.
Ammie’s Background
Ammie has always been a working girl. Summers were not for lounging. Instead, Ammie started her employment journey as a teenager. She learned administrative duties from her church office intern position. She developed culinary skills, making salads in the kitchen of a restaurant. She developed her communication skills as a hostess in a busy tourist-filled eatery. And then she went off to college.
As a college graduate 25 years ago, her first hill to climb was teaching a group of special needs high schoolers in Hoover. But her teaching wasn’t just from the books. Her students had their first prom. And Ammie taught them life skills along the way that rolled into employment opportunities.
When they graduated, some of her students became baggers. Others scooped ice cream. Some went to college … a special college called Unless U: “Unless you care, no one will.”
With her team, they raised the funds for a real campus. They built the building. Now, the building has outgrown its space.
In Ammie-style, you don’t ignore the problem. You build a bigger building.
Today, she’s moving another mountain.
The transformation of a dormant elementary school is now Ammie’s “bigger building,” set to open soon.
